I never understood the love for batman returns. The plot is just bizzare and all over the place.

Not that Batman is much better, but at least a little bit more coherent.

Part of it is how dynamic the characters are. Their story arcs have weight to them. The way Catwoman had everything taken from her and her revenge, how Cobblepot truly wanted to fit in and was ultimately rejected, it’s heart-wrenching.

I definitely see what you mean.

For me, I think the Tim Burton weirdness ends up detracting from the characters. Somehow in a movie with a man dressing up like a bat, The Penguin and Cat woman still felt unbelievable to me (including how other characters interacted with them).

We wouldn’t have today’s Superhero films without Batman '89.

Also, Batman '89 is better than Batman Returns, but it’s a paper-thin margin.
