I guess the way I’m thinking about it is that just because the third party doesn’t know it’s poly, doesn’t mean it isn’t poly to the people in the primary couple. It’s unethical and dishonest, but it is a situation where some of the people involved are being non-monogamous.
Why not? That sounds like a vegan rule: you’re not vegan unless you tell people you’re vegan.
It’s about consent of the other parties involved.

Polyamory is a type of ethical non-monogamy.
I think atro’s point is that non-ethical polyamory can exist. It shouldn’t be done, but can, and is still a type of polyamory.
I mean, yeah you can do polyamory in an unethical way. But it isn’t really polyamory if the poly part is a secret to the people involved.

Oh I know plenty of married polyamorous people.
I also know plenty of unethical married monogamous people
