Sleep soundly, for a while. 10 years ago it wouldn’t have even been worth joking about. Then you look at what car companies have done in the last decade, what Google and Apple have done, what Musk and Thiel have been doing just in the last 11 months, what Amazon and Ring have done, what police forces and Flock have been doing the last few years, what ICE is doing, you’re fooling yourself if you think there are upper limits on the desire for control.
It could probably be obtained much for easily with verified biometricID to enter/purchase something, which could be done much more simply than the shit plot above.
*yet
Was my point. It could be done over time.
Is there anything to stop the next Shitantir(Palantir) from lobbying and then having this embedded into construction code, etc.? Look at all these small towns waking up to find ICE is accessing their traffic cameras and so are vigilante Texas sheriff’s who don’t think women should have abortions…the point being if it can be done, and the wrong people are in power and those systems are designed to be edit the wealthy and powerful, it is just a matter of doing nothing and it will happen.

News@lemmy.world•Native American nearly deported after Polk County jail issues ICE detainer by mistake
5·2 days agoThe first piece of legislation passed by the newly formed California government was the “Chinese Exclusion Act” which among other things,
“prohibiting all immigration of Chinese laborers for 10 years… The Act also denied Chinese residents already in the US the ability to become citizens and Chinese people traveling in or out of the country were required to carry a certificate identifying their status or risk deportation. It was the first major US law implemented to prevent all members of a specific national group from immigrating to the United States, and therefore helped shape twentieth-century immigration policy.”
Let’s not just limit it to native Americans and Californios(native Mexicans who lived in California before it was stolen), that racist core of the US has been there since day 1. A contributing factor to a lot of the westward migration in the US was that “lower ladder” white immigrant national groups like the Irish, Italian and others who were bottom rung on the east coast could move West and finally have someone further down the ladder to kick.
This is one of the sustaining reasons for racism in general used to manipulate groups who feel tenuous control and power in a society; give them a line about an “other” group, tell them they’re better than that group and wham, you have folks ready to kill to preserve their perception of a precious advantage in society–when of course in reality they’re no better and in fact worse off as the weak fall or rise together.
If you are interested in learning more, the history of California is incredibly useful as a proxy to understand why certain legislation, perceptions and other things still alive in the US that propagate racism exist. Look at immigration quotas the US sets for different nations for example; much, much higher in predominantly white, western European nations while Asia (see California influence), despite MUCH larger populations are allowed lower numbers of immigrants/refugees, visas, etc.

1·2 days agoI don’t eat much beef but have seen prices rise along with everything else in the last 5 years but assumed it was just general gouging. Read an article last week that detailed how climate change (damaging crops and yields), increased feed cost and international competition have made many generational beef ranchers selling off stock in the last few years as they can’t afford to feed them.

10·4 days agoIt’s also that job applicants are such a ripe group for data theft; is this job real? Create a fake company site, post an ad, get personal info on a ton of people for scams, fraud, ID theft, etc. there are so many new companies, fake companies it’s impossible to tell the difference often.
The less into you give earlier in the process, unless required in your country, the better. Generally companies using a real applicant tracking system are more likely to be legit but even then.
Always go directly to the employers site to apply (though this does remove quick/easy apply options for things like indeed and linked in). Your privacy or a job is a messed up choice.

2·4 days agoWhile easy platforms to start on, unions driving more energy into social platforms oligarchs and governments own, can buy or control is not the greatest idea. The idea that follower counts are real, that “impressions” equal influence or even action are stretchers created by the marketing ideas that sold social media in the first place.

7·7 days agoI love that the article has the insane quote suggesting kicking out 55 million visa holding immigrants, and this quote says 30 million illegals… that’s 85 million people. That’s more than a quarter of the entire US population of ~340m. They propose, in a time of worker shortages, when basic needs aren’t being met to remove 1/4 of the people living here.
If you can look past the blatant racism and xenophobia that is driving by political ends I guess we can trust that this new “land grab” of available homes would be efficiently, effectively and responsibly distributed to those in need in a way that ensures continuity of communities, neighborhoods, cities, tax bases…don’t even want to imagine. America is falling apart and has been for 30 years. We’d go full RoboCop.

And fucking Excel. Better yet teach budgeting and spreadsheet courses in one.
If people had stats, budgeting and excel it would be an incredible improvement.
Budgeting also only gets you so far in our dystopian age when you need 2 full time jobs to pay rent.
