I can’t quite see the skin. Maybe it’s a carefully scooped out avo half? I’m just wishfully speculating here.

Believe if it was only now that the revelation that cigarettes cause cancer was in progress, there would be a large, confident contingent of folks swearing they’re actually great for you led by the likes of RFK Jr.
Thank you! Appreciate the article!
Thank you!
I was impressed and surprised to find such a resource this close to home. Some talented writers in the Huntington, WV area are really doing a service to their community.
Hope your session was fruitful!
Thank you! There are upsides to living in the Appalachian boonies for sure, but everything is pretty far away.
Goals:
There’s a writing conference in the big town down the road that represents civilization in these rural parts at the end of this month. Sadly, I have responsibilities that conflict and I won’t be in attendance. But the draw of this conference is that it lets local writers pitch to lots of publishers. This makes me want for a more coherent collection of publishable materials and “elevator” summations of the same. So I should prioritize getting my ducks lined up -for the next opportunity. Also, I’ve just got out of the habit of writing on the regular. Some more consistency would be great.
About me: I’ve been a broadcaster, journalist and lots of other stuff. I’ve spent some time penning some non-fiction on health and culture -none of it published, but I hope to update and edit and even self-publish if necessary. More recently I’ve worked on some speculative fiction regarding technological unemployment and knock-on effects and some Kilgore Trout sort of prompts. I write inconsistently around some absurd life -as I suspect lots of us do.
Always loved Bradbury. Understand he’s got a birth anniversary this week. Also think of The Long Rain when we’ve had unending rain and storms.
How does one become part of this group? I write in fits and starts and could use some accountability.
Lugosi? Fleck? Bartok? Enquiring minds want to know…
This is a pretty subjective question, but I’m really enjoying seeing everyone’s perspectives on it. I love dogs and have had a bunch over my life so far. I’d answer a certain kind of dog. A dog that has good engagement with you. These are rare but when you have one it’s special. Some dogs will often look right at you and have a certain focus and awareness that translates into a more interactive relationship than some other dogs. And yeah, there are ways to promote this through training, but some dogs are just more organically predisposed to being your very good buddy. Those have honestly been the very best pets for me.
Pressure cooker. Lets you cook a lot of cheaper, bulk food faster.
A quality double-sided safety razor. Saves a ton on cartridges. About as easy to use once you get used to it.
I thought it not bad. But I also went in with low expectations after Prometheus and Covenant. High hopes they seize some of what seemed the wasted potential of the synth storyline in Prometheus.
Our digestion of unprocessed foods improved with the addition of some fermented foods that maybe tuned up our gut biomes. Milk kefir in particular is a diverse probiotic and is easy to make yourself at room temperature on a kitchen counter.
Yeah. I was compelled to go cold-turkey off processed foods a couple decades ago for dire matters of health. I know it’s not possible for everyone, but for me it was utterly necessary and vastly improved the quality of my life.
Everybody’s now talking about satiety because it’s the mechanism of these popular GLP-1 drugs. I’ve been trying to tell folks about it for 25 years. It was literally the key for me to losing ~120 lbs and keeping it off. I resolved diabetes, hypertension and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease -and vastly improved other issues that were making me miserable.
The bottom line was an awareness that what I eat now has a direct and powerful effect on how soon and how much I’ll be compelled to eat later. I began to weight my choices towards the low-caloric density, the low glycemic and high-fiber. This of course also means mostly dumping processed foods.
I realize there is privilege in being able to do this and even devote the time to untangling health puzzles, I was fortunate to have the situation and support to do it.
I guess my point is that given resources it’s at least possible to game your own satiety without being dependent on expensive drugs. No argument at all that the quality of what folks now regard as staple food is lousy and in fact calculated to cause overconsumption, illness.
Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. For a book club. Not my usual cup of tea. Not bad though.
I’ve been sorta under the weather as well. if I feel ok, I’ll do what I do most Friday nights and volunteer at a community radio station about 2 hours away. It’s pretty fun. Really need to catch up on house and yard stuff sometime this weekend.
I wish they would maybe capitalize the proper nouns in this post. On first readings, not knowing Astronomer is the name of a corporation, I thought they were just referring to a CEO that also happened to be an avid stargazer -“What a strange detail to include…”.
Thinking about how low these folks usually go, I’m wondering why they haven’t just worked up a fake hatchet job file selectively incriminating their enemies and exonerating themselves. It possibly wouldn’t matter if it were called into question by evidence of tampering. Their devotees are indoctrinated enough to swallow almost anything -especially if it reinforced their biases against people they’ve already been trained to hate. What fallout are they afraid of in releasing a doctored list? I’d wager this will be the eventual outcome. A fake file that most know to be fake, but will mollify his base.
Well done!
Our water heater went out and I replaced it. After a series of complications, it’s working properly!
