They understand why I am passionate about selfhosting and privacy but they still have a reasonable expectation that things just work.
That’s somewhat where my head is at too at the moment. I do want to go the privacy route but I do also want something where it can “just work” (hence why I’m looking closely at third party solutions like entee and filen or proton drive). I do care about privacy, but having all the creature comforts that companies like Google has provided is still a bit difficult to let go.
Sync will stop once I close the app.
This is an iOS limitation, so no going around that unfortunately.
Looks like they did open a US data center, but the storage shares are still Germany & Norway.
I might still give it a shot, it’s not a large commitment so might be good to try.
I’d say like 65% backup, 35% share/collaboration. It’s why this simple decision has become unnecessarily complex for me haha. I want a balance of privacy, yet I want the ease of access and user-friendliness of Dropbox.
From this thread, I think ente is partly perfect for my needs. I’ve been trying out filen and it’s been quite good, but I might stick with Dropbox till the Proton mac app launches and see how it is.
Might end up just doing NC + storej, though. Many have said NC has improved significantly as of late so it might be worth a look at once more.
How do you like Filen so far? I tried it out with a few directories and it felt very snappy. Plus, the .fileignore feature is phenomenal and I wish more providers would do it!
I heard when filen was first launched there were some issues with their encryption and some file loss, do you happen to know if this has largely been fixed? Thanks!
I’ve heard a lot of issues (from a few old reddit threads though) in regards to NC Encryption, specifically with data loss and file integrity. I don’t think I’m comfortable going that route, but if they’ve made improvements I might as well check it out
Also, correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t Hetzner EU only? If I’m in the U.S., wouldn’t that make file syncs rather slow?
On their roadmap I think I saw they were going to bring support for it? But yeah I wouldn’t trust that until I see it. It’d be annoying to transfer over all of my data from DB to filen if I were to go that route, but at the same time rclone already supports Proton Drive, but the mac app still isn’t here.
This actually seems like a very cohesive solution, might try it out!
I’m curious, are there any ways to just not backup directories in a .gitignore type of way? I started trying out filen and this single feature is just very very compelling for me
I haven’t used NC in a while but the improvements seem good at first glance!
Sorry, but could you elaborate? Is there a specific way or thing you do to sync to azure?
I’m assuming this would cost a fair bit then? Also, what do you use to sync the files from your devices to the servers?
Yeah Flutter seems like the winner for my Project. I think the fact that I’ve worked with it in the past, and that it feels very react-y in some ways just makes it a lot nicer for me.
Plus… Hot Reload was a godsend haha
I’ll be sure to give it a try!
What other frameworks are you referring to and what would they be more well suited to?
Thanks!
Yeah I’ve looked through the website and it seems pretty good. I think being able to use it with vanilla React is really appealing to me, especially because (if I’m not mistaken) I can use any normal library I’m familiar with (such as tailwind)?

I’ve never heard of crypt.ee till today, but wow is it amazing for all my document editing needs. Thank you!
