  • I suspect at least some AI was used in the creation of the article, since it feels like exactly the kind of hallucination an AI would make with the utmost confidence, after fixating on some out of context upvoted post from some potentially ignorant forum-user, but honestly the flood of incorrect slop is so common nowadays it doesn’t even feel worth pitchforking or pointing out anymore. I just fact-check and move on with my life.

  • Especially for Nvidia/Gaming stuff I’d recommend a distro other than Debian. I love Debian, but it’s got a very uncomfortable and tenuous relationship with the very non-free nature of Nvidia’s proprietary drivers, and Nvidia is absolute garbage at compatibility and documentation on Linux (try and install their Cuda/AI shit on the first attempt by strictly following their documentation, I dare you, and good luck even picking which version of their documentation to use because there’s about 3 different processes and they’re all wrong)

PikaOS is a gaming distro based heavily on Debian, but part of a community with all the other gaming distros like Bazzite, Nobara, etc so they share most of the latest updates and configurations, they have tools to install various versions of drivers and other performance configurations you can play with. I know “just reinstall your OS!” is probably not the thing you want to hear, but honestly, Stock, out of the box Debian is pretty close to one of the most wrong tools you can choose for this particular job. And again, that’s not Debian’s fault, Debian is wonderful, it’s just … an extremely important and powerful tool for different jobs. Taking full advantage of modern Nvidia GPU hardware and gaming on it is one of the few that it is rather poor and frustrating at.

  • Being normal is not always the best choice in a world that normalizes a lot of terrible and mediocre shit. There are two sides to the normal curve, and I’d argue that only one side is objectively bad to be on.

I was private schooled for a few years, homeschooled for a few more, and public schooled for the rest (which was by far the worst years, but apparently my parents felt it was necessary for me to develop “socialization” pfft). Granted, that’s not anywhere near the same as being homeschooled for your entire childhood, and it was certainly for different reasons than most of the reasons that make homeschooling popular, but it was a unique and enriching experience, at least for me, and I’m thankful for the abnormal upbringing. It gave me a lot of perspective. Also my mother and grandmother who did the bulk of the homeschooling are smart people, well-educated themselves, and I don’t think that’s true of most homeschooling situations. Which is really the concerning part.

  • And California is the world’s 4th largest economy, behind only the entire rest of the United States, China, and Germany. New York State would be 8th.

The Democratic states and cities are economic and sociopolitical leaders for a reason. Don’t listen to the bullshit calling them socialist hellholes. The evidence suggests that taking care of your people (and maybe even having illegal immigrants too gasp or better yet legal immigrants) is actually an economically sound, and maybe even economically preferable strategy overall.

  • Many sociopaths are not limited by their lack of empathy and are able to navigate the systems of society with ease in ways that people with morals simply can’t or won’t. As a result, it seems likely that a very high proportion of the people historically and currently in powerful positions are in fact sociopaths. Our systems were never designed to defeat sociopathic tendencies, in fact they tend to reward them. And now that the sociopaths are in power, they begin to realize that nobody can stop them, and they become even more brazen as they make sure the systems reward them even more, and make systems that will never stop rewarding them.

  • Not only will I continue to use these commands, when/if they are ever officially removed, I will reimplement them myself because I am that intent on continuing to use them for the rest of my life. In almost all cases, the reasons we still use those commands is because they truly are the best tool for the job, at least from a UI/UX usability point of view.

And, you can accuse me of being stuck in familiarity and traditional thinking and you’re probably right, but I think the alternatives mentioned are simply garbage UI/UX. Their implementations may be beautiful and perfect under the hood, I don’t care. I will be happy to fully take advantage of that functionality and implementation when I write a wrapper around them to implement the deprecated command line interface instead.

Also, the article is straight up wrong in some places:

If you read an old Linux book from before 2010, you’ll find the arp, route and other such networking commands that do not exist in your Linux system anymore. You cannot even install them.

That is simply not true. They are perfectly installable and work perfectly well. I’m running Debian 13 and it still includes a package for net-tools.

You will have to pry things like route, scp and ifconfig out of my cold, hands on my cold, dead keyboard. Not going to happen. Period.

  • If the NDP grows too strong they’ll just consolidate the Liberals and Conservatives into the Canada Party or some bullshit. The problem with democracy isn’t democratic in nature, it’s corruption from the power structures that form and become self-protective. Democracy is just the game we play, the veneer of choice that makes what’s going on look nice and legitimate. These power structures and the people in them are playing meta-games above and beyond it. We can’t fix these things by modifying the game itself, it may help, it may disrupt them for a bit but they will just find new and probably more powerful ways to metagame the system and entrench themselves at the top.

Things like party politics, strategic voting, media bias, these are just tactics they use. How do we fight against them? I don’t know, but I know we can’t use the game itself, we have to play the metagame against them. Or at least prevent them from using it against us.
