I work in the restaurant business. The amount of people that show up at last call and expect to be treated to full service for another hour or more is outrageous. It happens literally every night. There is no shortage of entitled asshats out there.
Yeah, I’m always cautious showing up within 30 minutes of closing time and always ask if the kitchen is still open or if its not too late to get X (usually try for something easy to make).
If its within 15 minutes of closing time I just consider it closed
Yup. Worked at a restaurant way back in the day and yeah so many people come in minutes before closing and expected full service, which we always gave them because we couldn’t afford not to, but shit is it ever annoying. Plus most of these last minute stragglers were never good tippers and were almost always the most entitled people.
“couldn’t afford not to?” guarantee the restaurant was losing money by staying open to serve those customers. The hourly wage of the waiters, cooks, dishwashers, everyone except maybe the hostess, is all going to cost more than anything a single table could possibly order
Not every restaurant is a corporate chain restaurant there and no, we couldn’t afford to turn these customers away.
If you think about it, corporate chain restaurants are much less likely to lose money on that than small individual places, everything in a corporate chain is cheap and designed for efficiency. If a small, locally-owned place is gonna stay open an extra hour for one table, they’re practically guaranteed to lose more money than a corporate chain.
Even worse is having a manager who insists we stop cleaning, open the kitchen back up, and make them whatever they want, along with the other people who show up after close because “there’s still people here”.
“Can’t turn away business!” They say, as the restaurant hemorrhages labor expenses so that a late-night drunken deuce can split an app and a burger.
That’s your fault. If you can’t provide service, don’t advertise that you’re open. Any decent restaurant will provide full service to their last customers as if they were the first.
Hey, everyone! Here’s one of the assholes I’m talking about. If you have any questions for the entitled diner, now’s the time.
Another example of blaming the customer, not the manager. I’m there to eat, not run your business. What is with this expectation that customers at a restaurant should decide how much to pay the wait staff and also what the restaurants hours are?
If the kitchen closes early, let the customer know. If your boss forces you to keep the kitchen open for late arriving guests, complain to your boss.
You know you’re an asshole,right?
I’m not. Maybe I just go to better restaurants than you. It’s very common for the waiter to come by and ask if you want to order anything else before the kitchen closes. If you’re not doing that at your restaurant, that’s your fault. If a restaurant is starting to clear out, and it’s past the poster hours, I’ll ask when they’re looking to close up to avoid overstaying. But that’s as much courtesy as a customer needs to offer.
Our hours state that last call is 15 minutes before close. If you come in at 16 minutes before close, sure, we’ll serve you, but we will not continue serving you 14 minutes before close, because that is after last call. The people I’m talking about are the people that hang around for an hour, sip their drink, nibble their appetizer and cause the rest of the staff to stay on for no reason other than to clean up after the customer leaves. This isn’t a “manager” thing, it’s a shithead customer thing.
I just don’t understand what your “close” is then. If I come in 14 minutes before close, there’s no food? Why would you list your closing time at 10:00 if you won’t serve me at 9:50? If your kitchen closes at 9:45 then your posted hours should be 9:45 or earlier. If you’re serving multiple courses then your close time should be no later than 8:30 if the kitchen closes at 9:45. If you’re a to go place, then it should just be 9:45.
If you’re just talking about someone going to Chipotle 5 minutes before closing and hanging out for 2 hours, sure, ya, dick move, but I think you can also just ask them to leave.
Close is when they lock the doors.
You should be considerate enough to realize if you cannot order, eat, pay, and leave by closing. You didn’t get there in time.
Closing isnt when they stop taking orders, it’s when your supposed to get the fuck out.
Closing isnt when they stop taking orders, it’s when your supposed to get the fuck out.
That’s exactly it. I want to lock the doors, start sweeping and mopping, and close down the dish pit. I honestly don’t give a shit when someone shows up, as long as they understand that need to be out by close. Go ahead, come in one minute before close, here’s a shot and some bread that didn’t get sold during the rush, adios. I just don’t want to have to postpone my life because of the one person who decided to try to beat the buzzer, I’ve already been on for 8-10 hours and I’m beat. Shit, follow me to the bar I’m headed to, because they will still be open when I’m done, and you won’t look like an asshole. They even have a solid vegan burger.
I share the common sentiment of disliking corporate coffee shops, but this individual seems to have misunderstood the courtesy aspect. It’s actually Starbucks that’s providing the courtesy, not this self-centered douchebag.
That’s what she’s saying, she doesn’t have to ask because SB offers it as a courtesy.
For customers who were already in line before closing time.
That’s not what we were talking about. It sounds like you read it as the Karen saying she was offering a courtesy to the restaurant. If I have that wrong, then your original comment is unclear.
If there’s no indication that it’s closed, and no way out of the drive through after being told they’re closed other than continuing, IMO it’s totally reasonable to be upset.
Your car has one of those little thingies marked ‘R’ near the stick, right?
If that’s a reasonable alternative, sure. If it’s well down a drive through that’s curbed off, with several turns, that would make reversing tricky, then no. Indicate you’re closed
How about looking up the hours when you’re going late at night to make sure they’re actually open?
Hours posted online, or even on the door, aren’t always accurate.
Spoken like a entitled Karen.
It’s not like businesses have their hours posted everywhere, I’m sure that this day and age is in their website too, and I’m sure all that info is also on Google maps or any other search engine/review site out there.
It’s like there’s plenty of information out there to plan things ahead of time and the lack of planning on the Karen’s place isn’t the small businesses problem and no it’s not reasonable to be upset at the business with a scheduled closing time over your own lack of planning and leaving a Karen-esque review demanding service after the business is closed for the evening.
If they’re still serving customers, and there’s no indication that they’re closed, that’s BS. Places stay open later than their posted hours all the time.
Okay Karen.
Your opinion is foolish
So you’d be ok with someone walking into a business at 8:01, with the doors unlocked, and then not being allowed to leave, nor being served, until everyone else already in the store was served?
Drive throughs are the real evil here.
Meh, it’s bad timing or bad luck but it’s not the end of the world to just wait a few minutes for the cars in front of you to leave. I can understand being frustrated in the moment, but at some point you just have to cool off and accept that it is what it is. It’s just a few extra minutes to you, but for the people inside, it could mean using equipment for your order that could otherwise be cleaned while the last few cars are serviced.
Isn’t that to serve people who are already in the lane at closing time?
Not often in favour of corps, but it is a bit entitled to knowingly arrive after a places closing time to try to take advantage of that courtesy.
At this point it’s not about corporations, it’s about how much we expect corporations to exploit their workers for our convenience.

That’s pretty much the exact situation they’re describing. They were in line before closing, but were 1 minute after closing by the time they actually got far enough up in line to place their order.
Sounds to me like they got in line at 8:01 and it took them 7 minutes to make it to order, ie they were still inside the 10 minute “window”. At no point do they say they arrived before closing.
Not to defend this person, but I took it as they were stuck in line behind the other 2 cars and couldn’t get out so they had to not order but then wait for the other cars in front of them to get finished before they could leave. Which is frustrating, but no reason to give 1 star for people who are just trying to go home close to when they’re actually supposed to be able to.
They didn’t say that though. They said they got in the drive through line at 08:01, which would have already been past closing. They knew what they were doing, and the employees were clearly having none of that
That 8:01 part is probably a lie, as well. More like 8:10.
Won’t be back to this one.
Wait. No. Come back…
Too many people seem to think that being a customer at a company makes you the boss of the employees who work there.
These people need to get a grip and learn a little bit of self responsibility. The opening hours are posted, likely on the business doors, on their website, on their google page, multiple delivery app pages, etc. It takes like 5 seconds max to look at just one of those options. If you can’t be bothered to even take those 5 seconds to at least look, it’s on you if they’re closed.
I hate the entitlement too. These posts always come off like “MY order is more important that anything else in your life. Someone went out of their eay to be kind to me here before, so now the entire staff owe that to me, every single time. I didn’t get my way today, so I’m going to try to damage the reputation of the entire business”.
Yeah lady, I’m sure they’re going to miss customers that can’t follow direction, take self accountability, or show empathy, while also expecting the schedules of the entire shift to be bent in their interest. Totally.
I worked at Starbucks for way too many years. I have never heard of a “10 minute rule”. That’s absolute nonsense.
I have a 15 minute rule. Unless unavoidable I don’t go to any establishment if they are closing within 15 minutes. Why bother them as they are trying to get out of work and go home. Especially restaurants.
gets to restaurant after closing
restaurant is closed
shocked pikachu faceReminds me of my dad yelling at a dude at sears because they no longer carried his brand of pants. To be fair, I guess he did get the last laugh being that sears is dead. Starbucks will outlive humanity.
