The number of people who describe themselves as Republican has slightly declined since the last presidential election.

The polling firm Gallup, which tracks party affiliation monthly, says that those identifying as Republicans has shrunk by two percentage points since 2020. In February 2020, 30 percent of those Gallup polled said they were Republicans, while 29 percent considered themselves Democrats.

As of February 2024, when the latest data is available, 28 percent say they are Republicans, while 30 percent say they are Democrats, showing Republican’s base declining. Newsweek contacted the Republican National Committee (RNC) by email to comment on this story.

It’s evidence that progress really is marching forward one grave at a time.

It really doesn’t. I’m sure their error margins are larger than 1%. It could totally be the democratic party that has shrunk and the republican party has grown if the error is bad enough (which it almost certainly isn’t, but I’m trying to make a point). I’m not clicking that article though. I’m not going to justify that headline.

The fact that the base has only “slightly declined” is incredibly bad news, considering that the Republicans’ shift towards the deep end of fascism has been way more than “slight!”

I’m hoping that a significant portion of that 28% are just boomers who don’t keep up with current events and still think that Jan 6th was a fluke that nobody would have seen coming and that republicans are still the “party of fiscal responibility”.

By which I mean, I’d rather deal with people who have their heads in the sand than worry about almost 3/10 people actively rooting for dictatorship.

I know someone who still calls themselves a Republican but hasn’t voted for a Republican in the general election in decades. They argue that they are still a Republican at heart, but all the republican candidates have been terrible.

They said they were going to vote for McCain, but when he picked palin, they couldn’t vote for that either.

This applies down ballot. They do vote in the GOP primaries, but their preferred candidates almost always lose.

Dear America: You are waking up to the fact, as Germany once did, to the awareness that 1/3 of your people would kill another 1/3 while the last 1/3 watches.-

It may show the Republican voters base is declining, or it may show that those who vote Republican are refusing to answer the pollsters questions honestly.

To be fair they could be legitimately honest there. If I was asked that question I wouldn’t claim Democrat because I’m further left than the old guard Dems and the party at a national level. I would never vote republican.

…or it may show that neither party is growing but Republicans are dying faster.

Or just old bastards who have been voting for Reaganomics for forty years and can’t figure out why the rich get richer and they can’t afford healthcare.

Turns out conservatives love authoritarianism and just want to be ruled by a king.

Who would’ve thought the political ideology spawned to conserve the influence of landowners, aristocracy, and monarchy post democratic revolution would turn out to be such of bunch of auth dickholes?

You mean “died.” All the COVID conspiracies were from the right and they didn’t wear masks, sucked down horse dewormer, and travelled like they won the lottery. They asked for this, they DEMANDED this.

Let me just point out that as long as the Republican base remain highly-motivated voters, they will still continue to win and to dominate. If people that identified as Demoratic voters were 72%, and Republicans were 28%, it would be a tossup in US politics if they showed up to polls at 90%, and Dems at the more typical 35%. If you don’t want Trump in office, and you want to actually see him end up in jail for the wide variety of federal and state crimes he’s committed, get your ass out and vote for Biden–yes, yes, he’s not even close to being my first choice either–and make sure everyone you know votes for Biden.

What matters most is not what they publicly say, but how they privately vote.

So many people said Trump made them feel safe to show their true feelings. People are staying racist and fascist, just learning to keep it quiet again

i dont think the landslides are uncommon.
the whole tiktok fiasco could trigger anger in genZ into becoming politically active.

could also somehow still fall into regressive republican hands too. imho
