I personelly sort top day All which hits the sweet spot of getting still active posts with aldready some activities and it is neither too old or too new. I think it also covers the categories such as hot and active.

        https://join-lemmy.org/docs/users/03-votes-and-ranking.html

Active (default): Calculates a rank based on the score and time of the latest comment, with decay over time

Hot: Like active, but uses time when the post was published

Scaled: Like hot, but gives a boost to less active communities

So Active looks at the most recent comment, How looks at the post date, and scaled looks at posts but also boosts the less active communities so they don’t get buried

‘Scaled’ sounds interesting, though I don’t currently see it on lemmy.world web interface.

I sort by new, subscribed by default, for my mindless scrolling when I open randomly throughout the day. Then in the evenings I saw switch to top day, all for finding interesting convos and new communities.

Same. Unlike Reddit there’s not too much content to stay on top of it. It’s nice.

    Subscribed Scaled

I’m subscribed to a LOT of different communities so I usually don’t run out of content

I’ll do my All New duty every so often to upvote potentially interesting stuff. There’s a lot of crap to wade through, so I hope it helps.

Lemmy has gotten much slower, so I can get through all the new posts in the morning in 30m or so.

All, new messages, hot, they kinda all meld together when there isn’t that much activity.

It depends on how long I expect to browse and how long since last time. If I’ve got a lot of time, I’ll just do New. I’ve blocked a lot of communities that I have zero interest in, which includes some of the most prolific, so New isn’t as terrible for me. Probably takes some 90 minutes of I haven’t checked for 12 hours.

If I just want to catch the big stuff and don’t have a lot of time, I’ll usually do Top for however many hours since I last looked. Occasionally I’ll do active to see what people are talking about.
