Why isn’t it plugged into the headphone jack?
Because it’s an input signal not output, hence the line in
Even if it was an output, which it isn’t as others have noted, headphone out and line out are not the same thing and can’t be used interchangeably. Sound will of course come out of the headphone jack, but might have rather nasty side effects too.
I get what people are saying, but we have no idea what’s on the other end of that quarter inch plug, and it could be nice headphones.
It could also be 30-40,000 wasps
it’s literally labeled “tape in”, that might be a hint what direction it’s going.
If you read my comments very very carefully, you will see that am not talking about the directionality at all.
I’m pretty sure that is a TRS Monster Beats 3.5mm cable for the Beats Solo.
I get the feeling that whatever is on the end of that line doesn’t quite meet “nice headphones.”
EDIT: It’s probably just an aux cable plugged into an ipod/phone to allow playback of a backing track while playing a guitar.
At a glannce, my guess is that the tape jacks are an input but the headphone jack is an output.

Sometimes you need to be quiet when you practice
If it’s too loud, you’re too old.
From balanced to unbalanced tho
