Hi there,

I have decided to take down waveform.social. There are too many nefarious actors trying to break it and I don’t have the time or energy to keep fighting them off.

For your information: Over the pas month I have had to:

  1. Add various DDOS prevention measures to block unwanted (repeated) signups.
  2. Delete a bunch of literal white noise uploads that filled my 4TB picture storage… Twice.
  3. Repair Lemmy (or rather pictures) after it crashed because of full storage.

I will keep waveform.social active until Friday next week so you can pull data from here, though I expect most of it has been federated to other servers anyway.

    Daaaaaaaamn, my community was just getting some traction. It’s crazy people’s lives are so devoid of purpose that they choose to spend it attacking a relatively small music-based instance.

    Thanks for dealing with it as long as you did. Guess it’s time to pack up and move to another instance :/

    Sad to see this community go. lemmy.studio would probably be a good home for those people and communities that still need homes.

    I knew something must have been happening with the recent sporadic downtime over the past few days.

    A shame, but understandable. I’ve enjoyed my time here, thanks for all of your efforts in maintaining the instance!

      Not really. I could host this in a more robust place but the costs would be prohibitive.

      Of course, you could let everyone know where you’re going. I might follow too. There’s some talk in this post about a discord server.

    I’m sorry to hear that you’ve had to deal with all of that. I completely understand the decision, though. Thank you for all of the effort you have put into this.

    Maybe we could make a community on another lemmy instance, sort of in commemoration? I’m always open for more music communities.

    What a shame - I had wondered why my Memmy app kept failing to work but if I went via a browser without logging in Lemmy was still up and running.

    Thanks for the work you put into this, gutted it didn’t really take off, and I wish people would just fuck off with their efforts to break stuff for no apparent reason. Dickheads.
