I fear that Croatian football in general is on a downward spiral. Hopefully, I’m just overreacting but it doesn’t look too good.
How’s the national team looking for the future when Modric and the rest of the old guard retires?

I think that we should still be able to qualify for every major competition within the next 10-15 years given the talents that we have in certain positions.
I believe that the future core of our national team will consist of Gvardiol (CB), Baturina and Sučić (both CM/AM), Šimić (CF) and potentially Vidović (LW). They are already playing an important part in their clubs and have IMO the ability to achieve a world class career.
However, we do lack the same level of talents in FB, DM and RW. There are some decently talented players in these positions (e.g. Sigur) but it’s difficult to tell what their limit is as of now.
We won’t. Gvardiol reached the peak with our national team, we are on a downward trajectory in the next 10 years. Other than Joško, no world class player in sight.
I would not be that pessimistic about our future. We wont probably repeat the success of the last five years but we should still be able to qualify for the following world cups and Euros.
For a nation of our size, second and thrid place in the wc is an enormous success. Yes it would be nice if we managed to win one of those but France was better than us in the final and so was Argentina in the semis.
As for whats to come when Modric and Perisic leave, it’s anybodys guess, but we will surely go through some down period.

Good thing is that we will have a title race (at least until winter) between the first three teams. However, it is quite shocking how bad our club football is. The only reason that there is a title race in the first place is because Dinamo dropped down to the level of Hajduk and Rijeka.
I just hope Dinamo doesn’t win. As a bonus, I would like club from my county, Rijeka, to win. As an extra bonus, I would like for Al-Shabab to win the Saudi league.
