I love that I refreshed the front page to find this meme at the top with “-2 new comments” but at least the whole thread hasn’t been nuked.

Nice work mods, let’s keep hateful comments to a minimum while still encouraging healthy discussion with people that might honestly not know better.

I never understood the gays who voted no on a referendum back in the 2000s and justified it with some religious and heteronormative bs like “marriage is from religion by religion” and “we’re the outliers, so we shouldn’t make people conform to us”. Like, how self-hating and backstabbing can you be. If you don’t want it, you don’t have to have it but let others realize their dreams at nobody’s expense.

I do agree that marriage is a religious thing and I wouldn’t care at all, but getting married brings a lot of benefits.

So its not like gay people want to “realize their dreams” but we want the same benefits that straight people have.

If religious people dont want to accept gay people, then benefits shouldn’t be given based on religious acts like marriage.

Marriage is not religious. Getting married in a church, with a priest and before God is the religious part.

In a lot of countries you can get married without any religion being involved. Some government officials will then officiate the wedding.

Even true in the religious U.S., even in ultra-religious Indiana. My wife and I got married by a lawyer (a very old family friend) in a ballroom. We said we didn’t want any mention of god or religion and he complied. This was 23 years ago, but it hasn’t changed.

I only meant “realize their dreams” in the sense that some people want it as part of their life goals. I personally don’t want it and couldn’t care less but I still want that possibility for others.

When I was in middle school pretty much every teacher in the school was in one big lesbian menage a trois. Everyone knew it, and they would all cycle through being roommates with each other. Last I checked, there wasn’t an unusual amount of gay alumni. On an unrelated note, we also learned important skills like critical thinking and understanding the world we lived in, turns out that mattered quite a bit more in my life so far.

That sounds absolutely hilarious. The closest I ever got to that was spotting a middle school teacher years later at a Pride festival. He did not remember me and I was too shy to go talk to him. I had the hunch that he was gay but it would’ve meant a lot to me if he were out during that time. Oh well, he was a great teacher regardless.

It was an open secret that my high school French teacher was gay. He pretty much couldn’t hide it. He would have made MAGA boomer gaydars go off. But at the time, you would get fired if you were openly gay and a teacher in Indiana. It was so fucking stupid. Everyone just turned a blind eye to it. He clearly loved his job and wanted to do it for the rest of his life, but how sad that he had to hide a key part of himself just to do it. I’m not sure if he’s still teaching- I don’t even remember his name over two decades later- but if he is, I hope he’s happily married to his then incredibly hot boyfriend (I’m not gay but he was so hot, I might consider it). I only knew about the boyfriend after graduating and running into them a couple of years later. I guess unlucky in his job but extremely lucky in love.

As an aside, when I was a rather innocent pre teen, I was into hair metal of the 1980s, and liked the Motley Crue song Girls, Girls, Girls. I didn’t know what menage a trois meant though…so I asked my French teacher.

One of my dumbest moments but honestly I really didn’t know and it seemed reasonable to ask the person who knew French.

Until the picture is more clear, society should be mindful (not hysterical, mind you, just careful) about how to talk to children about this.

Yes, we definitely should only teach children about proper, true, God-sanctioned heterosexual relationships until we know how to talk to children about two men holding hands.

Exactly how does it hurt kids to teach them that some people identify with a different gender than their biological sex? Do you have some psychological studies to back that claim up or are you just presuming you know?

Some of them will start to imagine that they as well might identify with a different gender then their biological sex, which can cause them significant stress – like the term “dysphoria” aptly suggests. This is supported by data: the amount of reported gender dysphoria in young people has risen steeply over the last 20 years.

A kid who thinks they’re heterosexual might start to imagine that they as well might identify with a different sexuality than the one they were born with, which can cause them significant stress.

Do you not see how this is the same?

And the reason the reporting of the number of cases has gone up is we’re more accepting of trans people now. Guess what, the number of LGBT+ people in general has gone up. Because people can come out of the closet without fearing for their life a lot of the time (but not every time) these days.

Genders are a social construct, yes, but some people are literally born gay. It wasn’t like they chose to be gay - they just are. To say that sexuality is a “result of society” is absolutely ridiculous. To put this in perspective: can you, a straight guy, can just choose to be gay? Can you suddenly decide that you want to suck a dick? That’s how you know it’s not a social construct - you’re literally hard-wired to be whatever the fuck sexuality you are.

I sort of get what you’re saying with heterosexuality being the “default” because it’s quite literally how the human race needs to reproduce, but please don’t go saying that people choose to be gay, because they do not.

I always feel like “Choose to not be gay” people

            1. Want to try sleeping with someone of their gender
            2. Decide to suppress their needs because of religion / societal pressure
            3. Say to themselves “I’m not gay because I married a women/man”
            4. Project this on to all people and say that gay people gave in to their desires while straight are strong and don’t

They don’t realize not every man wants to suck dick.

They don’t realize step 1 already makes them gay no matter their choices.

The point of this post is to point out that the argument of “teachers are corrupting kids into being gay by talking about it and having books with gay people”. The fact that most people are straight doesn’t factor into it at all, unless you mean that everybody is born straight, in which case you’re just wrong. Btw a useful thought experiment in general is to swap “gay” with left-handed. Would you ever say that being right-handed is the “default handedness”? Would you care if a teacher mentions being left-handed?

If you have a pretty loose definition of default, it’s easy to conclude that right-handedness is the default handedness. I wouldn’t be surprised if OP agreed with that idea.

Right, but at that point “default” becomes a useless term. Elsewhere in the thread OP said they’d raise their kids “heterosexually” or smth, and if they’re consistent with wanting to raise their kids the “default” way, they’d also want to raise their kids right-handedly, as girls (because women make up slightly more than 50% of the population), in Mandarin, etc etc. Nobody’s entirely default.

Sure, you could say that right-handed is the default. And? It doesn’t impact any other arguments.

Going even further into extremes, over 99% of matter in the universe is helium or hydrogen. By that definition of default, helium and hydrogen are the default state of matter, and carbon-based lifeforms aren’t “supposed to” exist.

Neither of those are LGBT+ issues, for the record. I know one or two of the stories you’re talking about, one that was a drag performance and another about a book with a same-sex relationship, but the issue with either of those had nothing to do with their connection to LGBT+ topics–at least it shouldn’t have been, but they were treated that way. They should’ve been handled just like anything else inappropriate in a school, but at large, the problem was treated as them being drag or having LGBT+ characters.

There’s no need for legislation for this kind of thing because the same things that are inappropriate for queer people to do in schools are already inappropriate for cis/het people to do. I’m not saying that in disagreement with what you said, just pointing it out in addition.

Except if you changed those situations so the acts were the same, but the people involved were all straight and cis, they’d still be a problem.

Them being LGBT isn’t the problem. Them having NSFW content is, regardless of the specifics of that content, and the identities of the people involved.

I don’t think what you’re saying is true. I know someone who very actively doesn’t want mentioning of gay people to kids. For context, he’s foreign-born, isn’t otherwise conservative, and has been a US citizen for probably longer than most people on Lemmy have been alive.

I mention this anecdote because it’s part of many anecdotes and the vast majority of people in his community have viewpoints that I’ve heard and are much more extreme than his.
