Preferential voting is so much better than first past the post, glad to see it being implemented more.
No electoral college, allows voters to support small/tertiary parties without “throwing away your vote” and ensures each vote matters as it just carries over. Now you just need to make voting mandatory.
Quite recently, many (mostly Republican-run) US states have made ranked choice voting illegal (including the state in which I happen to live).
I foresee Democrats working hard to roll back ranked choice voting in NYC as well.
Other blue areas of the U.S. were dragging their heels on ranked choice. NYCs latest headliner pretty much put those plans in the dirt now that established dems know they could lose.
What’s the reasoning for mandatory voting?
It ensures the votes reflect the entire country, rather than a small group of boomers.
