Note: this is Scott Weiner, not Anthony Weiner.

Anthony Weiner resigned from Congress in June 2011 after it was revealed that he had sent sexually suggestive photos of himself to different women, including a minor.

As co-chair of the California Legislative Jewish Caucus, Wiener has been instrumental in advancing several pieces of legislation aimed at promoting Holocaust education, as well as countering antisemitism and anti-Israel activism, especially on university campuses.[144][145] Wiener and CLJC worked to include “guardrails” in the ethnic studies legislation to “provide clear direction to local school districts and the California Department of Education that anti-Jewish and anti-Israel content cannot be included in the teaching of ethnic studies”.[146][147] Through CLJC, Wiener played an important role in securing $80 million from the state budget for various Jewish community priorities for 2024-2025,[148] as well as a similar amount in 2021.[149] Wiener and CLJC have also been criticized by Jewish Voice for Peace for “twist[ing] criticism [of Israel] into antisemitism”[150] and opposing a Gaza cease-fire resolution in Sacramento, while only stating that Israel should “be more surgical” in Gaza.[151] Wiener and other CLJC officials commended California State University Chancellor Mildred García for placing Sonoma State University President Mike Lee on leave after Lee announced support for an academic boycott of Israel in agreement with protesters and Students for Justice in Palestine,[152][153][154] which was seen as aligning with the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, and which Wiener described as “horrific and wrong”.[155][156][157]

Hard to say where he really sits without knowing more about him, but voice wise it seems he was calling for people to protest Israel’s actions while not performing them specifically at Jewish events. Which I get. Bringing the protests to specifically Jewish events in the U.S. isn’t protesting Israel, it draws the idea that if you are Jewish you are Israel, which is false. His comments that Palestinians should be able to live without fear I haven’t seen anyone mentioning and the fact that they are quoting him from 2021 saying Israel should be more surgical, 2 years before things escalated from the Oct 7th attack and prior to any ground invasion.

A U.S. Senator speaking about Israel overreach in 2021 is actually surprising.

I’m willing to bet a loaf of bread was < 20¢ the last time something similar aimed at her seat.

Sweet, was mad that there was no serious candidate challenging Pelosi from the left this last election. SF deserves better.

Filings list Wiener as a candidate in 2028, and since launching an exploratory committee in 2023, he’s repeatedly said he would never challenge the two-time former House speaker from San Francisco. However, if Pelosi decides not to seek another term next year — a real possibility for the 85-year-old — then Wiener could simply form a new committee for 2026 and transfer the campaign funds.

Well, that’s disappointing. The Democratic Party doesn’t need any more spineless cowards waiting their turn. If you don’t have the balls to tell an 85-year-old to retire, you don’t have the balls to stand up to fascism.

B-but, if we stop rewarding seniority and nothing else even if we run terrible losing campaigns… Multiple times in a row… Th-then it’ll never be MY turn…

Dear God, before you know it, the DNC will be some kind of meritocracy, where the most charismatic candidates with the most popular ideals win! The horror!

    “Who’s that?”

    “He’s Scott Wiener”

“I know he’s got wiener but what’s his name?”

Didn’t Pelosi say she wasn’t going to run for reelection this time around? Or am I mistaking her for one of the other Do-Nothing Democrat Fossils?

        googles JFC she is 85.

Man there so needs to be an upperbound on age of elected officials.

Like how does this woman who has been in office since 1987 have any idea what’s going on in the common person’s living room?

All of these fossils both R and D need to be gone. Wow.

*I thought this reply was going to go a different direction… But I was so put off by her ages and time in office.

        Just wow.

Not sure if I’d be that confident (unless I missed some sarcasm). The article quotes him as staying he’d never want to challenge her for her seat, and he’s just waiting for it to open once she retires so he can run. Also refers to Pelosi as an “icon” that he wants to succeed. That’s not an indicator of someone who wants to go against the establishment.

At a minimum this guy won’t have the same level of intuitional clout Pelosi used many many times to hinder progressive policies and engage in political horse trading. So even if this guy is literally a 1-for-1 Pelosi clone he’ll be a much weaker hurdle to overcome than she was.

Thought it might have been sarcasm, but honestly wasn’t sure.

Since the headline is missing context and could be interpreted as a newcomer looking to kick Pelosi out of her seat, and knowing how many users on Lemmy just reply to headlines without reading the article itself, the possibility of that happening just seemed stronger I guess.
