For context, I finally figured out (accepted?) that I’m bi at the ripe old age of 33. I’ve never really expressed any interest in my outward appearance but recently have found myself wanting to do so.

Ok, so now for the question: I came across a blue hair TikTok filter yesterday (pictured) and now I’m hours away from an appointment to bleach, colour and style my hair. Am I making a mistake? Honest feedback is appreciated!

Why would it be a mistake? If you want to have blue hair, go for it. Life is short and dyed hair is for everyone.

I’d like to see the results if you feel like posting it!

There’s color safe shampoos and conditioners that will help your color last longer. You might even be able to find blue specific ones.

That sounds like pretty great care! I’d recommend using a conditioner that’s made for coloured hair, otherwise I think you’re good to go! (And don’t shampoo it too often, twice a week should be enough for most people - bleach dries up the hair and so does shampoo, and dry hair means dandruff & greasy hair!)

Go for it! It’s a bit cliche to talk about how “liberating” it can feel to change up your hair, but only because that feeling can be so real. Especially if it’s something you haven’t done before. Make sure you talk to the stylist about how to take care of it (shampoo, conditioner, etc.) to make sure the color doesn’t fade. Good luck!

If I may give an additional suggestion? Maybe let the beard get trimmed too and get some tips on how to maintain that while you‘re at the stylist.

A few beard tips I’ve picked up from my barber buddy:

When you shave for length control, use down strokes (no up & down) to encourage the beard direction. You’ll trim the stragglers but well behaved hairs will help to keep it looking more full.

Use a round-toothed comb to keep it need and detangle, preferably one with two widths between teeth for detangling and styling. They’re inexpensive and easy to find at a pet store, and usually available in all metal for easy cleaning.

Personally, I like a beard oil or beard butter for conditioning mine post-shower or face washing. It helps to keep it from getting tangled, reduces what gets plucked during combing, and keeps it softer for longer.

I wish I had the confidence to dye my hair blue! I’ve always wanted to try blue hair. Whenever I walk past someone on the street I always have to stop myself from visually 'miring it, because the person with the blueness doesn’t know that I’m gawking out of admiration

My only piece of advice would, if possible, be dyeing your beard blue as well for that sweet coordination bonus.

But yeah, the dark blue looks good! As someone who also has dark hair and experimented with dyes in the past, I hope your journey goes better than mine ever did.

I blue my hair all the time. A fresh haircut and dye job just makes you feel good. Enjoy!
