South Africa have selected a replacements bench with only one back for one of the biggest games of the World Cup so far. It will get all the media attention this week but it’s a highly risky one in case they suffer an injury in their backline.

    They’ve been playing backs in weird positions for the last couple years, so I’d say they’ve been prepping this for a while

    …aaaand it didn’t work. Not to say that they lost the game because of this, but they didn’t seem to get any of the advantages expected from it. A couple of big scrums was about the height of it. It turns out that you can’t win a top level test match without a goal kicker, no matter what tricks you pull.
