He has a BS cult of personality like trump. And has learned he can distract from his real scandals by causing an overload of stupid shenanigans. That will capture the media focus. And keep it from where it should be.

In the UK we call it a dead cat strategy.

There is one thing that is absolutely certain about throwing a dead cat on the dining room table – and I don’t mean that people will be outraged, alarmed, disgusted. That is true, but irrelevant. The key point, says my Australian friend, is that everyone will shout, ‘Jeez, mate, there’s a dead cat on the table!’ In other words, they will be talking about the dead cat – the thing you want them to talk about – and they will not be talking about the issue that has been causing you so much grief.[1]

      Bullshit.

He just threw down big support for trump, he knows trump cant win CA so this could be a ploy to help him in TX.

Additionally, musks good friend Ken Griffin of Citadel Securities alongside Blackrock are opening a rival to NYSE in (you guessed it) Texas. Whether or not its related, idk.

Believe me when I say that it is not to help Trump win Texas. I’ve lived here for over 40 years, and for the last 25, I have kept hearing how this is a “purple state” and “it’s gonna be a swing state soon”.

        It’s not.

It’s not, it never has been, it never will be, and it’s never been worse here. Which is why I’m leaving this hellhole once and for all next week with my cat, and I ain’t never looking back.

Someone, I’m presuming a teacher, petitioned Texas Department of Family Protective Services which, under the directions of the governor, investigated my ex-wife for daring to have a trans kid in a conservative town.

You can’t respond if you’d like, but I really don’t give a baker’s fuck what you have to say, mate, because you are either willfully ignorant of this fascist bullshit at best or a supporter of it at worst. Either way, maggot-filled bicep gash is more appealing to me that your opinion.

Knowing many people who’ve worked for him, you have about 6 months at a MuskCo brand company max before you really know what a piece of shit he is, and either a.) leave ASAP, b.) convince yourself it won’t be so bad and hang on for ~2 years, or c.) fall into the cult of personality and believe that Daddy Elon loves his little proles and cares very much about all the hard work you’re doing [EMPLOYEE NUMBER HERE].

The absolute last stop on the “Musk is Tony Stark but IRL epic gamer Redditor and likes weed and Rick and Morty!” train was when he called that cave diver a pedophile. It was apparent well before then, but anyone acting like they had no idea what a piece of shit he was after that either didn’t hear about it, or was willfully ignorant because they wanted to continue pretending that basing their entire personality around a billionaire wasn’t a terrible idea.

I’m not saying SpaceX isn’t without valid critiques, but if you don’t see the value of reusable rockets and can’t even give them credit for spearheading that, I’m not sure what else to say. Make no mistake I think Elon Musk is a bigoted piece of shit, but I can also acknowledge that SpaceX has done important work

Yes, the rocket is reusable. The fuel is not, and by lowering the cost per kg of space freight, it has driven more usage of rockets. Which use non-renewable fuel at astounding rates and make huge emissions for a minor payload total.

We’re seeing extreme temperatures and unseasonal weather events already - James Webb is cool and the ISS does need service missions but Starlink is just more orbital trash waiting to happen.

It’s not helping. We aren’t going to get a “deus ex machina” moment on righting damage done to the environment. Yes focus on the bigger goals and pollution sources, but this is a trend in the wrong way to enlarge Elon’s money pile.

Starlink will never be orbital trash in any meaningful way. If everything failed today, they’d all deorbit within 5 years. It’s only in higher orbits where shit gets stuck for decades or hundreds of years.

I’d like to see what people’s reactions would be if we put all the 6,219 starlink satellites in a pile on the ground and lit them on fire. Would they say “fuck yeah! Fast internet!” or would they say “are you out of your mind?”

And they plan on having 12,000 or something each lasting about 5 years.

Do you know what all those puffy clouds coming out of the engines at engine cut off and start up are? Kerosene or methane and oxygen. Do you know what injecting methane and kerosene into the upper atmosphere does to the planet? No, no one does because it wasn’t ever a problem when there were 5 launches a year. Now that there’s 5 launches a month we’re getting to the find out stage.

Same with starlink. What does aerosolized aluminum (and whatever else is “just burning up” on reentry) do to the upper atmosphere? When there were one or two satellites a year how would you know? Now that there’s several a month (20 in the last launch that didn’t make it up) we’ll find out.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say none of that will prove beneficial to life on earth. But yeah, the rocket is pretty cool.

The dude attacked him in the media, and Elon is petty and vindictive.

The guy told it like it was. It was a PR stunt and nothing more. His submarine was rigid and stood zero chance of navigating the intricate cave system, of which the caver was an expert. Elon didn’t like his sub (and him by extension) being ridiculed, so he used his social media clout to make an unsubstantiated and nigh libelous claim that the guy was a pedophile.

Whatever Elon’s retaliatory reasons are for his vindictiveness, a rational person can safely assume that those reasons are tied to his hollow soul and crêpe-paper-thin ego.

If you’ve got a guy with 100 million followers talking shit about someone else and making wild accusations against them against another person who has practically no following at all, then the response is far too powerful for the issue at hand.

I’m curious, is it reasonable to blame employees for their employers actions like this? I mean to a certain extent perhaps, depending on your position in the company (like if you are part of upper management then you are more responsible obviously).

Many people are just trying to get by and getting jobs is not easy. Is it okay to blame a person for working somewhere if they don’t have much other choice? Capitalism kinda forces you to work within the system like this.

they built another deathstar right? the first one was completed and fully operational before the rebels destroyed it and the second one was still being built when it was blown up

the first death star was manned by the imperial army only people on board were stormtroopers dignitaries imperials so when they blew it up no problem evil punished

the second time around it was not even done being built yet was still under construction job of that magnitude would require a hell of lot more manpower than the imperial army had to offer

bet they brought in independent contractors in on that thing plumbers aluminum siders roofers

in order to get built quickly and quietly they would hire anyone to do the job you think the average stormtrooper knows how to install a toilet main

all they know is killing in white uniforms

all those innocent contractors brought in to do job are killed casualties of a war they had nothing to do with

alright look you’re roofer some juicy government comes your way you got a wife the two kids in suburbia

this is a government contract with all sort of benefits and along come these left wing militants and blast everything in a three mile radius with their lasers

they did not ask for that they had no personal politics they were just trying to scrape out a living

I’m a little surprised that this comment has gotten so many upvotes.

Would you apply this same logic to the real world? For example, imagine if a manufacturing facility for Lockheed Martin or General Dynamics was bombed and thousands of working class Americans died. These people are building bombs that are being used in an ongoing genocide.

Would you consider this a heinous terrorist act, or a noble strike in the fight for freedom?

Especially when the job market contracted with all the IT company layoffs, some people may be stuck in jobs they hate because opportunities are few and they’d rather not be homeless or have their kids not have food and so on.

He wanted to go Texas for the taxes for quite some time now. All he needed was a lame excuse to blame his own cheap decision on someone else.

So maybe I’m stupid but… Why? Why does he feel he needs an excuse beyond “taxes are cheaper in Texas”? Like, it’s understandable that a business owner wants to reduce costs, and reducing your taxes is one good way to do it. The blowback from saying something relatively mild like “I want to pay less taxes” is going to be way less than the blowback of saying “I want to leave California because trans people have too many rights here” right?

I’m not trying to defend Musk or anything here, I’m just so confused why he’s going this route

Same here, I used to have this image in my head of a eccentric entrepreneur pushing technology to the max with ‘fuck you money’.

Sure he said some crazy shit sometimes, but it kind of felt like he didn’t have much of a filter.

Around the time of the Thai cave thing this started to change, but I still gave him the benefit of the doubt until that point.

After that, things just went down hill…

I think kinda everyone did. I never loved the guy, I got weird vibes and thought he was majorly overrated, but I thought he was fine, and I respected the work he’d attached his name to.

Hell, I still respect the hell out of starlink, as someone who had dial-up or old style sattelite with 15GB/mo limits until I moved out of my parents house 6 years ago. That shit’s cool as hell, I would’ve killed for it as a kid, and my dad did shell out for it when it became available.

I don’t really attribute anything cool that’s come out of Elon’s companies to him any more though, in my mind all the credit goes to the talented leaders and engineers that are “under” him. There is something to be said about bankrolling these things, I suppose, but I don’t think it’s as noble a mission as we all once thought. He just wants to be liked by people and make money.

To be fair, not that he deserves it, I still don’t know if we have enough information to say for certain that he agreed with the apartheid stuff. We know he benefited from it and hasn’t said anything against it. We can also safely assume he’d agree with it now, but I can’t say at the time that anyone should have assumed any more than him just benefiting from racism, which can be said of almost anyone who isn’t a person of color in the west.

There’s a saying in Russian “ради красного словца не пожалеет и отца” (“for a nice-looking word won’t spare even father”). By that very law “safely assume” is usually used where no, it’s not safe to assume something.

this is a mere business update about a tech company…nothing about tech that any other company couldn’t do.This exact same thing could have happened 100 years ago with some airline magnate who decided to move headquarters for some legal/accounting/marketing reason :D

Tech is about new products, principles, ideas, innovation, patents, methods, engineering, achievements, drawbacks, etc.

But your argument, from what I read, is that they fawned over him because he made money. You’re specifically calling out the business/monetary side:

a capitalist world fawning over capitalists

No, they fawned over him because they liked his character and persona in public.

You see all of the electric cars on the road now?

You mean those things that aren’t public transport? Those things?

Tesla saw an opportunity to make money, and it paved a path to lower carbon emissions (eventually) still profiteering from privatized transport while pretending it was fixing anything.

              FTFY.

Capitalism isn’t all bad, it’s the greed it breeds that’s bad.

Capitalism is literally just a set of excuses and pretexts to justify gross economic parasitism - old-style concepts such as “greed” doesn’t even hold a candle to that.

My own personal opinion of him is that he’s a shrewd businessman in a world that prefers businessmen over creators. The second the public eye shifted to him he clearly had some mental episode that has only been heightened by drug use and being egged-on by the alt-right and social commentators like Rogan. Ironically, he’s become a creator, but his content is the actions of a broken billionaire lashing out.

It’s almost funny really. Way back when, his goals were commendable. The proliferation of electric cars was an Eco-friendly dream. Tesla battery projects were poised to expand renewable energy source utilization. Basically everything SpaceX was doing with reusable rockets was just really cool to the nerd demographic. All he had to do was shut the fuck up, let the work speak for itself, and people would still like him. Not without black marks on his record, of course, but on balance, people would probably like him.

But no. Elmo couldn’t shut the fuck up, a problem he continues to have at every turn, and people learned who he really is. His electric vehicle baby stopped being the scrappy upstart with teething problems, and started being a manufacturing disaster that had loose production tolerances matched only by the loose tolerances on what qualified as acceptable working conditions. SpaceX decided that cluttering orbit with thousands of disposable satellites was cool, and the environment and astronomy could fuck off. The only stories about Tesla Batteries that followed were about how quickly they lost their capacity and how expensive they were to replace. And Elmo himself bought a globally known communications company, immediately obliterated it’s value, and turned it into a cesspit of literal Nazis. And this is the abridged list.

All Elon Musk had to do was shut the fuck up and people would have liked him. Just goes to show that “Just be yourself” is really shitty advice for some people.

There were a lot of engineers making noise about Elon being a complete fucking idiot a long time ago. People were dismissing it as jealousy, but it was one of those quiet industry secrets.

Lo and behold, Elon was never accepted into a doctorate program and there is a bunch of shady shit about him even having a B.S. in physics, looks more like he failed out of the program and got the degree after a large donation from his father.

Elon started believing his own bullshit and exploded himself for being a fucking loser rich kid who has done nothing but funded some projects smart people told him to fund.

Also don’t forget, he buys companies that are already successful and then rewrites their history to say he founded them, and then he tells engineers to do a thing and takes the credit when those engineers figure out how to do it.

I will, however, readily believe that most of the Cybertruck was actually his idea, probably initially drawn in crayon.

Everyone would have still loved him had he stayed away from Twitter and worked with a low profile. But he uad to toot his own horn at every chance and let his true self get exposed.

There was a time when I… well, I didn’t really follow him all that much, but I didn’t have any reason to dislike him. That changed when he tried to back out of buying Twitter.

At the time I was unhappy with how Twitter was handling its problems. I was hoping things would improve with new ownership. When he backed out, I started to see what kind of person he really was: someone who thought he could do basically whatever he wanted.

By the time he actually did but Twitter, I was glad the government actually stuck it to him and made him go through with the purchase. And I’m glad Twitter is failing because of his own blunders. I’m hoping it eventually dies (I’m already trying to move on to other platforms like Bluesky or Mastodon. Just waiting for people I follow to move to them.) and that he’s still left with money he hasn’t made back after that purchase.

No way that’s the real reason, the real reason is taxes. So many California millionaires move to Texas for the low tax, only to realize once they’re there that it’s a shitty state with a barely-functioning power grid. Unfortunately it never seems to click for most of them that the low taxes is a big part of why they don’t have a competent state government.

If it isn’t, then it’s worse, because that means he’s only saying it out of cruelty and petty malice. And it means I now loathe him somehow more than I already did.

I’m sure they’re aware, they just don’t care. Being wealthy they can buy more than their fair share of the power grid, or any other utility or government service, for less than they would pay in taxes in a functioning state.

How fun would it be if the next Texas power grid failure manages to cause serious damage to Apartheid-Baby’s pet project?

This is hilarious. With the Texas electrical system, there’s going to be days when they cant operate.

My company cancelled opening up a campus there because of that issue!

Because he is not really moving. Moving the HQ doesn’t mean moving the entire company. He is just moving the address of where the corporation is registered and only move the finance and admin department to Austin. Texas has no corporate income tax.

Just like how he “moved” Tesla to Austin. and turned the office in California into a R&D hub. So basically every Tesla employee in California stayed in California.

He could drop a few billion into TX power grid infrastructure and probably buy quite a bit of goodwill.

          *Taxes with fewer steps.

No need for all that pesky tax paperwork, save for end-of-year tax filings.

Dude could foot the bill to end world hunger. Doubt either would happen anytime soon. The last charitable thing I can remember him doing was offering that dumbass submarine in the Thai cave rescue before calling the actual rescuer a pedo.

Also investing into local infrastructure or running your own seperate seperate infrastructure is more of a Fordian thought process. Which has been all but abandoned by the modern corporate class. I legit dont get why companies with large campuses specifically with large parking lots arent fallibg over themselves to build awnings with solar panels on top.
