  • My partner is a lot younger than me. But when we meet we were at similar life stages: she was starting a first career, and I was changing mine. Our age gap then was smaller, both absolutely and relatively, than yours.

Anything can work, but each red flag makes it less likely. If you’re not after something serious, who gives a shit. If you are, be on high alert. Is he a man child? Is he controlling and finds young people easier to control? The latter is hard to find out before it becomes a problem.

I went on some dates (before I met my partner) with more similar gaps to what you’re talking about, though still none so extreme (university town - more than half the people I dated back then were staff or students at the university). It became obvious to me that while these people were nice and smart and funny, it was going to be difficult to have a long term relationship, practically, because of that difference in life stage.

  • No, that does not seem to have any relevance to bets placed on the thing. What connection do you think is there?

What I mean is, if you can correlate bets with the activities of specific groups, then you have something. If all you have are bets, why the fuck do you assume they’re insider bets?

Here’s a good way of looking at it: if you didn’t know that the US attacked Iran but could analyse the bets taking place, would this group of bets make you confident that the attack would take place? Or would it be lost amidst the noise of people betting each way? Can you find other cases where big bets were placed that didn’t pay off?

  • Yeah. I kind of get it though, and some historical facts do have a material impact on your understanding of that cultural backdrop, while also being much easier to test for. (And I think it is reasonable to have some kind of check on integration, even if imperfect, for naturalisation)

In this example, if you know that the Acts of Union were 1542 for Wales, 1707 (huzzah) for Scotland and 1800 for Ireland, that tells you something about the relative strengths of the bonds between the different countries in the union. It gives you historical context for why Scottish Independence is a stronger movement than Welsh Independence, and helps you navigate interactions with people from the different countries.

So a test that asks questions of that character can be objective, concise, and still encourages prospective citizens to learn things which are useful from the point of view of integration. In these topics people often bring up queuing culture (but I’ve never invited someone to go in front of me at a checkout that I remember), tea culture (but loads of people don’t drink tea, disagree on milk/tea order, etc), sports (I don’t follow any) that all have significant problems.

  • The Lords should represent all views, including religious ones. Creating a secular society isn’t done by getting rid of bishops from parliament, because religious MPs and Lords will still be there. Secular society is only created when those in power agree not to let religious belief of one group restrict the behaviour of another.

But with that, there is nothing wrong with having bishops and imams in parliament. They bring an important perspective on ethical matters. I don’t agree with the position of the church on assisted dying, but many people do, and having that perspective reflected is good, even if I would rather it didn’t win out.
