The City of Parksville has confirmed there is no intention of including prayers at its inaugural meeting after the next municipal election in 2026, according to a news release by the city.
The first article seemed to indicate that a “blessing” by Chief Recalma of the Qualicum First Nation was part of the complaint. I had to click through to the article about the original complaint to find that they were only taking issue with the Christian prayer. I’m relieved!
Including our local First Nations is an important act toward reconciliation, and a formal Welcome to the first session is a great step, assuming they are willing to participate. I hope all formal government meetings now start with a Land Acknowledgement or Welcome. This has mostly been my experience in the education sector.
Wow, I wasn’t expecting such a good outcome to this. Fantastic.
