Don’t forget downloading the installer and registering an account on some dubious site you’ve never heard of.
Whenever I pirated something in the 90’s I went to this site, covers archive, where I could print out the CD cover inserts. So in effect I pirated a physical copy, minus the box it came in.
I did this too but with DVDs. Also I bought a ton of DVD boxes on the internet. Still have some of the DVD:s in my shelf
XD Yeah, its not like you can play right off the disc anymore. I’d personally trust Steam more than Xbox or Playstation to keep my games secure.
You really shouldn’t. I love steam, but there’s no telling what will happen once Gabe is not in charge anymore
Because optical discs are slow af lol.
Blu ray caps out at around 72MBps.
A gen 4 nvme drive can hit 7500MBps. Over 100x faster
Reading from disc during run time makes no sense today.
I don’t get why they haven’t switched to usb drives. They’re cheap, and have high enough storage for today’s games.
Assuming you “own” a digital copy Playstation and Xbox will be just as secure. Well, aside from issues with forward compatibility a few generations down the line which is always less of an issue on PC.
The issue with discs is that they’re expensive (shops need to keep them stocked, they need to be distributed to the shops, etc.), slow and fairly low capacity so most modern games would require multiple discs. The last one would, in addition to being annoying, severely limit game design if the game needs to be playable without copying all files over to the console’s SSD for some reason.
With all that said - I can understand why people would want to be able to install from discs. Yes, discs are slow but some people’s internet is even slower, especially in rural areas.
Disks are 100gb these days. They aren’t low capacity, and its rare that a modern game needs more than one.
A lot of people’s Internet also comes with data caps, with a additional charge per X GB, even if it’s not slow. Looking at you Cox
having your older brother download the fitgirl pack of Dishonored 2 and put it on a flash drive to give to you
I miss box art and gaming guides.
I’m not anti physical media; I buy Blu Ray discs because they offer a much higher bitrate than streaming. However with three people using my PS5, the convenience of not needing to swap discs outweighs the advantage of having a physical copy that I am highly unlikely to sell or lend.
It’s also a 100Gb download.
I was so confused when I got a game that only had a slip of paper inside.
This is why my disc tray gets no action
We all have dry spells every now and again
Fallout New Vegas did this to me over 10 years ago. Brought the box home from GameStop only to find the waste of cardboard wanted me to download the game from steam instead.
I’m still baffled by the Spyro trilogy on Switch
Still not as bad as the international release of Final Fantasy X and Resident Evil Revelations.
All the physical games I install don’t download the whole game, just the inevitable patches.
