I am an Afrikaans native speaker and if it is what it is alluded to in our SA media (and this piece) it is just a rugby call that we make the whole time. The word that Curry think he used is not really in South African lexicon as we have our own dedicated words for that type of vulgar type of speech. Whenever I have payed rugby we have always spoken Afrikaans, because the vast majority of the players will be Afrikaans. Bongi played at the Stormers so I am pretty sure he would also do all his rugby calls in Afrikaans.
Jersey Colour: groen (green) = South Africa/Ireland wit (white) = England Swart (Black) = NZ etc
kant (said like the word in the article) = side
So wit kant would mean on England’s side
If it is not that, then it needs to be looked into and he will need to face the punishment. Let’s wait for the investigation to finish before we crucify him.

All I am saying is that we don’t really is that word. If he did it would be very deliberate as he would need to remember or plan to use it in that way. Or he could have picked it up in the URC while touring over there.
I just think the easiest explanation is the language and misinterpretation of it.

I do think you’re right and this is probably a press-fuelled nothing story. Curry was very low key about it (briefly mentioned it to the ref and wouldn’t talk about it after the game) and it’s most likely there’s no-one in the wrong, aside from those responsible in the press and the social media morons abusing everyone involved.
The shaking hands thing I got from the news reports so I can’t be sure on that point.
There’s a lot of South Africans on reddit commenting that “wid kant” or “wit kant” (I forget which) is Afrikaans for open side - and he can be seen in the vids trying to get defenders back into position.
Apparently kant is pronounced the same as cunt

Except apparently the incident happened after the ball had already been kicked out of bounds so there wasn’t any play to refer to. Of course everything anybody is saying about it is speculation at the moment, other than that Curry complained to the referee about being called it
And half of people are saying oh, it means wide side / open side, other’s are saying no no no SA use the terms Pink Side & White Side in Afrikaans. So who really knows.
I just wish everyone would shutup about it because NZ doesn’t need anything to get SA to circle the wagons & fire up anymore than they already are for a final!
