Old person sends a compliment in DMs, gets ignored. They come back to the DMs after several months and, being old, they get confused. They think their own message that they sent months ago is actually a new message from the other person and say thanks.

Or they’re being super passive aggressive about being ignored and saying what they think the other person should have said sarcastically.
